STORMKING was one of a fleet of wartime Naval armed tugs used for escort and rescue work, i.e. a ship damaged by enemy action or weather would be escorted or towed by one of these powerful vessels toi the nearest friendly port. As tugs go they were larger than most, but for open sea work, not exactly huge at 142 ft. 6 in. bp. (156 h. l.o.a.) and 33 ft. beam; compare this with the 250 ft. or so of the big salvage tugs like Zwarte Zee.
At least four of the class - Envoy, Enchanter, Encore and Stormking - were built by Cochrane and Sons limited of Selby, a firm famous for tugs. All were fitted with oil burn ing triple expansion engines. There were differences in many details - armament, cabin layout, fittings, etc. - but the basic hull and superstructure shapes were common.
